Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Firm makes 24% of all of the world’s chips, and 92% of essentially the most superior ones present in in the present day’s iPhones, fighter jets and supercomputers. Now TSMC is constructing America’s first 5-nanometer fabrication plant, hoping to reverse a decades-long development of the U.S. dropping chip manufacturing to Asia. CNBC bought an unique tour of the $12 billion fab that can begin manufacturing in 2024.
Because the world grapples with an ongoing chip scarcity, a quiet big amongst chipmakers has dedicated to investing $100 billion over three years to ramp up manufacturing.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Firm is probably not a family identify, however with a market worth of over $550 billion, it’s one of many world’s 10 most useful firms. Now, it’s leveraging its appreciable sources to convey the world’s most superior chip manufacturing again to U.S. soil.
CNBC bought an unique tour of the $12 billion fabrication plant, or fab, in Phoenix, Arizona, the place TSMC will begin making 5-nanometer chips in 2024. The corporate says it’ll produce 20,000 wafers every month.
“These are components which are going for use in a number of completely different locations: CPUs, GPUs, IPUs, and so forth. They’ll be utilized in smartphones,” Rick Cassidy advised CNBC. Cassidy is TSMC’s chief technique officer and the president and CEO of TSMC’s undertaking in Arizona.
TSMC makes key parts for all the things from cellphones to F-35 fighter jets to NASA’s Perseverance Rover mission to Mars. Earlier this month, it introduced plans for a brand new manufacturing unit in Japan, the place it’ll produce chips with older applied sciences, for issues like family units and sure automobile parts. TSMC can be Apple’s unique supplier of essentially the most superior chips inside each iPhone at the moment available on the market and most Mac computer systems.
“However they continue to be kind of within the background, when it comes to finish markets. So Apple will get all of the accolades when a brand new cellphone comes out,” mentioned Joanne Itow, managing director of producing at Semico Analysis.
“We’re low-key. We let our merchandise converse for themselves. Their success brings all of the enterprise that we may ever hope for,” Cassidy mentioned.
The U.S. was the birthplace of superior silicon, however for many years now, it’s been dropping market share to Asia, the place 79% of the world’s chip manufacturing occurred in 2020, in keeping with business affiliation SEMI. It calculated the U.S. was liable for 12% of worldwide chip manufacturing final yr, down from 37% in 1990.
TSMC alone was liable for 24% of the world’s semiconductor output in 2020, up from 21% in 2019, in keeping with the corporate. In relation to essentially the most superior chips used within the newest iPhones, supercomputers and automotive AI, TSMC is liable for 92% of manufacturing whereas Samsung is liable for the opposite 8%, in keeping with analysis group Capital Economics.
“It’s grow to be virtually a monopoly at the forefront, and all of these manufacturing operations, for essentially the most half, are out of Taiwan, Hsinchu. That turns into a matter of nationwide significance for america, however not solely america, however the Western world,” mentioned Christopher Rolland, Susquehanna’s senior semiconductor analyst.
Together with leading edge 3- and 5-nanometer chips, TSMC additionally makes bigger chips for merchandise comparable to electrical toothbrushes and coffeemakers. Automobiles usually use less-advanced 28- to 40-nanometer chips. All kinds of chips have been impacted by the scarcity. Carmakers together with GM and Toyota have paused manufacturing at some vegetation. And Apple is more likely to slash its 2021 manufacturing targets for the iPhone 13, with orders for some fashions delayed by greater than a month.

Secretive Big TSMC’s $100 Billion Plan To Repair The Chip Scarcity
source
10:49 There is something missing that they are not telling us. If they are able to recycle 90% of the water, and treat it with reverse osmosis and such, why does all that water need to be reinjected into the aquafer (presumably for humans to drink) and not be used directly into their production? Why their production require fresh new water from the city, and not use their own recycled water?
Water shortage….. that's a BIG problem !
Taiwan #1. Go invest in TSMC stock. End of the year should be 160. If Samsung new chip failed to be competitive, then TSMC will dominate it all.
Taiwan NO.1
how is smallest better, is it just to make the over all device smaller, how much room does a chip take? seems silly, going smaller and smaller has its limits, not just size wise, technology wise too, just wastefull

Wow , 已經200多萬的觀看人次耶..
An obvious reason of conflict (🇺🇸 🇨🇳) and definite answer to the question (period).👍🏻
Intel making 3 nm by 2025? No way, they can't even make 5 nm by 2025.
I know trump is controversial, but i feel like he did a good thing with fighting with China on trade. I'm not a trump supporter or any politician really, but this is something my mother used to say all the time. When she was growing up there were jobs everywhere here and it felt like when China joined the wto massive amounts of jobs left for lower cost of labor, almost no regulation and other costs. It seems our American companies don't care that their biggest customers (like apple) don't even have opportunities to have entry level jobs in a company like that, that's where the us is failing and why the middle class almost is nonexistent anymore.
All fine… But will it be a fully automated plant ? If not what about the wages in US? I'm very sure that wages in US is very high compared to the wages in Asia…
Talk about a global monopoly…
These chip makers that need tonnes of water should think about Detroit and Illinois instead of the deserts of Arizona, as they have all the water.
I support Taiwan by preferring Taiwanese products over Chinese when possible. Hope many people will join me as well.
Americans are paid so little that it is becoming cheaper to manufacture here again, lol
"Most advanced technology manufactured in USA" will immediately be BEHIND current technology of the time manufactured in Taiwan. Sad fact.
Why will China try to take Taiwan. This company alone is reason enough that they will try
They forgot to mention every chip is made with more of earth's dwindling natural metals that ARE NOT INFINITE THEY WILL RUN DRY WHAT THEN!?
My mind is just like telling me "it's not going to be enough" there's going to me further exponential growth in demand that they're not going to keep up with unless they're building several new factories rather than just one. Maybe another 10 or 12 would do just the trick for the next five or ten years.
How will this effect game consoles like XBOX Series S/X?
Why the USA would make short-term profit decisions that would put us in this running-from- behind-to-catch-up position when we were the original inventors of this technology, is a testament to how even our national security is sacrificed in the pursuit of un-holy corporate interests and profit. — OUTRAGEOUS!
RIP Taiwan. The US won’t defend it after chip manufacturing leaves.
already USA lost the war but won the battle, Taiwan removed their shiel volitionally bad move
China is just too timid to counter brutal attack of US
The free trade cult has done grave damage to America and global security, as Asia cornered the manufacturing pie through subsidies. Those fools don't realize that you don't fight war with stock options.
6:15 is this guy part green goblin from spider mam 😭
Lookie ! It's goofy Mr. NO-SOX
Us already lost the race 👍
China has taught the rest of the world that it is too risky to do manufacturing there. Saving 25% in cost does no good if you have nothing to sell.
Tsmc need democracy
Which explains why China is shipping so hard for Taiwan.
This is OLD news. TSMs plans is over 2 years old. Funny how this news media site does not tell you that Trump got all this started. After Trumps meetings 2019-2020 is when TSM purchased land and looking in Jersey and other places. TSM announced a deal w Phoenix Az May2020. Trump also had meetings w Intel who are also building in Arizona, and Samsung. That man got so much business rolling back into the US after decades of neglect from politicians like Biden. Very sad that his hard work is brushed under the table. Biden wouldn’t have had a clue and still doesn’t. Remember when he and his hacks said inflation is only transitory. God help us
i can make potato chips without all them machine
It's a must for TSMC to move in USA for security against China Invasion. China wants to invade Taiwan to take the high technology.
🇹🇼 ✌🏻 🇺🇸
just get it done for god sales really!
