Consultants consider there’s a cleaner, safer and higher method to harvest nuclear vitality. With its latest energy plant, China may be first to get there.
Scientists are very enthusiastic about an experimental reactor in Wuwei, China, and so are environmentalists. The reactor is cooled by molten salts as an alternative of water, and as an alternative of utilizing uranium, like
most industrial nuclear crops, it’s fuelled by thorium. Thorium is a weakly radioactive steel that’s far more considerable than uranium. It’s additionally not as messy, producing much less waste that continues to be poisonous for a fraction of the time.
Even by way of security, thorium trumps uranium. Thorium can’t trigger a reactor meltdown, and it can’t be used to create nuclear weapons as simply.
So why has thorium not been used earlier than? It has. Thorium was tried early on as gas for nuclear energy crops. Nevertheless it was deserted as a result of it couldn’t be weaponized throughout the Chilly Warfare.
Catching as much as uranium-fuelled crops and making thorium commercially viable would require risking an enormous funding. China clearly feels it’s value a punt. It’s assured the primary industrial
crops to go surfing in 2030.

Thorium still produces radio-active waste that needs to be securely stored for many many years. This means future generations will be paying for energy created previously – developing countries can't afford this. Decommissioning of old nuclear plants is also still prohibitively expensive also leaving future generations with the cost of energy generated by previous generations (intra-generational injustice). There are so many other renewable energy options available with many being developed all the time, such as next-gen solar & wind (including bladeless wing turbines), in-conduit & turbulent hydro-power, energy from gravity, bioluminescence, biogas from human waste (generated constantly & for free), biofuels from micro-algae, clean waste-to-energy, next-gen geothermal and so on. Electricity can be generated where its needed, negating the need for expensive transmission & distribution lines. I also don't like the idea of a nation being "in the pocket" of another nation, especially China, as this leads to exploitation, extraction & export of natural resources that is actually the heritage for future generations.
German THTR-300 was it, ran 432 days and failed. On May 4, 1986, a fuel ball got stuck. When handling the stuck fuel pellets, a large amount of radioactivity was leaked. The factory said it was radioactivity from the Chernobyl accident (occurring 8 days ago), but it was exposed, causing a crisis of confidence.
China didn't invent molten salt reactors. Weinberg did, at Oakridge USA, in 1965. Other countries are further along in their development.
Almost there by China !!!
Well, this video left out a lot of important information. For starters, "thorium reactors" burn uranium, not thorium. It turns thorium into uranium-233 which splits and sustains a chain reaction just like regular uranium-235. You may say that extracting thorium has a smaller environmental footprint and is less prone to proliferation, otherwise, it is just not that different from current mainstream fission power. It will not be the silver bullet to the global energy and climate crisis. Don't set your expectations unreasonably high.
China's trash, if anything they stole the tech from someone else..
China is probably making everyone think it's best so all other countries use it accept China and China will be even more powerful while making more weapons and slowing everyone else down.
Possible maybe this is the reason why they sell their oil reserves they dont want it anymore
Thorium reactors have been around since the 1st reactors were developed but they went the other way because of being able to enrich nuclear materials.
China did not figure it out, they learned it from the United States. The MSR is the brainchild of Dr. Alvin Weinberg, he designed and ran the test reactor at ORNL back in the 1960's.
IFTFY
Let South Korea be free from the chinese government. as let chinese be free from the pingping .
India🇮🇳 has had nuclear reactors for years
lol, if the world become nuclear powered and the war between china happens then we better be practicing 50's culture by now /s
Give the world cheap , clean and self-sufficient in energy
Governments Love the idea of centralised energy production because it gives them control over people and they can oblige them to pay money
That’s why China plan to build moon camp. New material only can be taken from moon. Baby
The Indians have several reactors all ready using Thorium. This isn't something new. Not sure why DW brought this up.
Nuclear has been safe this entire time!
Made in China 😊
Nuclear power has been safe for decades
No. The thorium reactor urban legend has been around for a a while. But it's named after Thor so it's unbelievable.
I haven't heard much about the thorium reactor story but have heard but but it's some kind of urban legend. I thought that the thorium, mithril, dragonscale and adamantine thing was mythical. Maybe naming it after Thor wasn't the best idea.
Just like the stories of a person attaches a widget to a car engine, and it runs hundreds of miles on one gallon, and then the government takes it away. Then their car has normal efficency again.
It's time to shutdown the Nuclear Power plant. Germany already to shutdown by the end 2022.
Finally something that we could appreciate from china
