CANBERRA: Australia will host a two-day Quadrilateral assembly of the Overseas Ministers this month.
Australia will host a Quad assembly of Overseas Ministers in Melbourne this month, as reported by Sky Information Australia
Counterparts from India and Japan will be part of the US and Australia for the two-day summit, which may even focus on the disaster in Ukraine and threats to nationwide and regional safety.
Australian Strategic Coverage Institute Mark Watson says the Quad reinforces the very fact Australia “sits because the hinge on the Indo-Pacific”.
“It implies that Australia is now on the centre of an interlocking geometry of bilateral, trilateral, and quadrilateral preparations,” he mentioned.
“It’s about sending a message to China that if you are going to bully a rustic like Australia if you are going to undertake financial coercion and different types of coercion, you run a threat,” he added.
The Quadrilateral Safety Initiative 2.0 was shaped on the sidelines of the Affiliation of Southeast Asian Nations and East Asia Summit held in November 2017 with the proposal for the maritime alliance being mooted by Japan.
